The Battle Against The Surge: Addressing the Rise of Auto Thefts and Home Break-ins

Property damaged. Car stolen. Family threatened. Peace of mind shattered.

As break-and-enter crime rates continue to rise across the Greater Toronto Area, citizens are growing increasingly concerned about their safety. In response to the crime surge, Condor Security is sharing the best solutions and services available to combat these threats.

Reports on the rise

There have been 466 reported residential break-ins in Toronto as of February 2024, according to the Toronto Police service. That’s up from 399 reports the same time last year. The city has also seen a 400% increase in home invasions and break-ins resulting in auto theft over the last year and maintains a rate of one stolen vehicle every 40 minutes, according to the Toronto Police Chief.

The Equite Association, an anti-crime organization funded by insurance companies, reported an all-time high as Ontario exceeded $1 billion in auto theft claims in 2022, with their 2023 report reflecting a continuing trend. The study also revealed a 48% increase in the number of reports in Ontario alone.

Condor Security at the forefront

Global News recently wrote a feature that spoke to select experts at the forefront of home security in the GTA. Among those interviewed was Benjamin Tabesh, founder and CEO of Condor Security. With 23 years of experience in the field, Tabesh understands the unnerving reality facing GTA citizens right now, as well as the growing need for professional, reliable home security solutions.

In his interview with Global News, Tabesh said that he’s seen a “five-time surge” in clients to his company since 2019. Of that surge, he explained that it isn’t just the more affluent residents seeking increased security presence. Condor Security provides both private security services as well as neighbourhood collective programs in order to be more cost effective.

Tabesh also pointed out that while the police are more than equipped and qualified to respond to break-and-enter crimes, the increased volume of reports has led to organizations like Condor Security becoming crucial in protecting communities and providing a level of deterrence.

Security presence in the community

When it comes to combating crime, there is huge value in security presence. Private mobile patrol and security guards provide clients with security services that can be tailored to their needs and schedule.

These services are flexible and customizable. Clients can adjust the security services to fit their specific requirements. The ongoing security presence means a constant presence on your property, and swift action from Condor professionals in the case of an emergency.

The community itself is a major tool that can combat crime. Neighbours see things, and are able to communicate with each other about activity taking place in and around the neighbourhood.

Condor Security takes the power of community and amplifies it through our neighbourhood collective security programs. These programs provide dedicated security resources that are cost effective and that work towards deterring crime across entire communities.

The programs help neighbors share information about incidents and improve response time during emergencies. They can be initiated by groups of neighbours or through the local Business Improvement Area (BIA).

Additional solutions for safety

Aside from physical security solutions, there are other security solutions available on the market that, when used on their own or paired with a physical security service, can make a huge difference to your safety. These include;

● Extra lighting

● Proximity Detection Systems

● Security Surveillance Systems & Video Monitoring

● Alarm Systems

● Physical Security Barriers & Hardware

● Sirens & Audible Speakers

83% of offenders check for the presence of a home alarm system or surveillance equipment, according to researchers at the University of North Carolina. And 60% of those offenders claim that they change to a different target if any security system was present.

Offenders are also likely to leave a property if they feel they’re drawing too much attention, like if an alarm begins to blare, flood lighting is triggered, or if they fear their actions are being recorded. In fact, even the presence of one security tool is enough to deter an intruder, as it suggests that there may be other tools being employed in other areas on the property.

Each of these tools serve to render your property as inaccessible as possible to intruders, and to provide you with the best chance of preventing a break-in before it happens.
